Class 2: The House of Your Dreams

today's lesson was about COLOR. we looked at examples of colors we see in nature, in man made objects, in our everyday lives and in art and architecture. we discussed color words like pastel, vivid, pastel, pale, dull, bright, dark, light... we read The Big Orange Splot. the students were given a simple drawing of a house (like the houses on the "neat street") in the book and redesigned and altered it into the "house of their dreams" using a choice of colored materials: markers, oil pastels, chalk pastels, colored paper, tissue paper, ribbon and glue. below you'll see their creations and what they had to say about the houses

john: my house has a basketball court on the roof and a water slide. that is me surfing the waterslide. (oil pastels)

aoife: my house can fly. my house is in california. it is yelow and blue. it's like my car and i ride in it.(construction paper, glue, oil pastels, markers)

katie: i tried to use blue, purple, pink and green to create my own house. these are some of my favorite colors. i added some different rooms. i tried to make it big and bold.(oil pastels)

nicholas: i saw somebody else making a big house so i wanted to make a huge house. the design is supposed to be crazy. i decided to do dark colors because it's supposed to be a scary house. a cyclops lives in the house.(dry pastels)

owen: my house has a green roof and a dock with a large pool and a playground (haven't drawn yet). it also has a science lab. (oil pastels)

albina: my house is pink and purple. i have a big garden around my house. there are hearts coming out of the chimney. i used bright colors with a neutral door and chimney.(marker, tissue, glue)

camilla: my house is a dog. the ear is a bedroom and the tail is a huge water slide! (dry pastels, marker)

dashiell: this is a crazy house. it has a cat on the outside and green and blue smoke. (markers, pastels)

elaine june: i was using the ribbon to make a lot of chimneys, and dotted green ribbon for the garden. the blue ribbon with polka dots is a ladder. the lines around the house are animals scurrying around. (tissue paper, ribbons, glue, pastels, construction paper, markers)

niamh: it has a purple doorknob with a crazy pattern with my favorite colors. there is purple smoke coming out of the roof. i life on a hill and my dogs name is Billy Girl. i have a pool at my house. (pastels)

ruby: it's going to be a hot air balloon but it's not flying. (oil pastels, construction paper, glue)

sophia: it's about crazy designs and lots of color. what i like about the house is that there are a lot of different squiggly lines and different colors. (oil pastels, dry pastels)

olivia: this is my house. i used all different colors. the grass is all over. i chose an all-blue chimney. (dry pastels, ribbon, glue)
